Pedimat Common Questions and Benefits

Why Install A Pedimat?

Pedimats reduce and retain dirt and moisture before it is tracked into your building. Ideal for high traffic entrances, these mats come with a variety of insert types for scraping/wiping dirt and capturing moisture and debris in the recess below. At 7/16" deep they are easily installed in recessed wells or can be surface mounted.

Weight Load Capacity

Designed to support up to 350 pounds per wheel load, Pedimats are highly durable and recommended for heavy foot traffic as well as light to medium rolling loads. Most Buildings have alternative entrances/docks for deliveries for heavier loads. If a higher wheel load is needed view our PediTred mats which support up to 1,000 pounds per wheel load.

How Big Of A Pedimat Do I Need?

An effective entrance matting system is made up of three separate clean-off zones or areas. Generally speaking, 15 + feet of matting is needed to adequately protect your flooring and provide a safe surface for foot traffic. This 15 feet of entryway matting can all be Pedimat matting or another aluminum roll-up mat can be part of the 3-mat entry system. Pedimats are designed to be at least the width of the doorway or set of double doors and as long as possible. Many times the entire vestibule or foyer will be covered wall-to-wall, door-to-door, with a Pedimat. The recommended outside, aggressive, scraping-type mat might be an all aluminum Pedimat with Exterior Brush inserts, designed for this type of use. Use a Pedimat with Heavy Duty Carpet inserts in the foyer/vestibule area. Then, inside your lobby, use a softer wiping-type of mat to complete an effective entrance matting system. Select the style and performance combination best suited for your facility. Because Pedimat entrance mats are all custom made, we can meet your specific size requirements to offer optimal performance and function.

What Is The largest Pedimat I Can Order?

Pedimats can be manufactured in rail lengths of up to 12 feet. Generally, the only limitation to size is overall weight of the mat. Also, many shipping companies have a 10-foot length limit. In order for your staff to clean and maintain your Pedimat, you should consider the weight for individual sections on your entryway matting, keeping in mind the ability of your staff to move the mat and/or mat sections. Pedimats can be made in sizes/units for your unique application.

Custom Sizes and Templates

All Pedimats are custom designed for your individual needs. This customization ensures that you will have the correct size, type and color of rail insert, and aluminum color that is the best combination for your facility. See our tutorial for step by step instructions on how to determine the best size Pedimat for your facility. A template is required when an entry mat is not made of right angles. A template service is available; for a fee a service technician will come to your facility or job site and make your template ensuring a custom fit.

Pedimat Recessed And Surface Mounted Frames

Pedimats can be installed indoors, outdoors, in recess wells or on a flat surface. There are frames available for the different types of installation. For example, an existing recess area might need a tapered angle frame or a surface application mat may need a tapered vinyl border. Please refer to the different frame options shown below.

Insert Types

There are a variety of insert types and colors available for Pedimat roll-up aluminum mats. Three are a multitude of Heavy-Duty Carpet insert colors and Exterior Brush insert tread colors offered. Also available are Poured Abrasive inserts, Abrasive Tape Inserts, and Rubber Tread inserts. See the chart below for a complete selection of the different types and colors available for the Pedimat.

Aluminum Finishes

The exposed rails and hinges on a Pedimat, as well as the frames, are made of aluminum. The stock finish is a standard mill aluminum finish (a natural aluminum color). There are other finishes and colors available including anodized aluminum and powder coat finishes. You can coordinate not only the type and color of insert material but also the aluminum rails and frame to compliment your interior design and aesthetic. See the chart below displaying the color and finish options available.

Cleaning

What a Pedimat does best is effectively scrape dirt and remove moisture from all types of footwear. With Pedimats unique aluminum roll-up design, you can effortlessly clean not only the aluminum mat and rails but also the recessed well area beneath the Pedimat. Maintenance staff can simply vacuum the surface of the mat regularly and periodically roll back the mat half-way to systematically clean the recessed well, reversing the process for the other half of the mat-- all without lifting or removing the mat from its recess. When needed, your Pedimat can be extracted for a more thorough deep cleaning and your entrance mat can be cleaned using a pressure washer. We recommend doing a deeper cleaning after the winter months, or as the seasons change, to keep your mat operating at peak performance. For more cleaning tips visit our cleaning page and tutorial.

Refurbishment

The sturdy aluminum rails and hinges in your Pedimat will last many years. Sometimes, however, the aluminum portion of your mat exceeds the life of the carpet insert strips or during remodeling, your vestibule and lobby areas might change color schemes. Replacement carpet insert material is available allowing your maintenance staff to replace and renew the appearance and function of your investment. For about half the cost of a brand new Pedimat, you can revitalize your entryway. Refer to our  tutorial on how you can replace your existing carpet inserts for your aluminum roll-up entrance mat.

Ordering A New Entrance Mat

For new construction the "rough opening" size of the open space (width x length) is needed to determine the size of the frame and entrance mat.

To replace your existing Pedimat entrance mat measure the inside of the frame on the sides and center of both the length (red) and width (green) to determine if the recess is square. Accurate measurements are important! These dimensions are known as the "rough opening" which are then used to fabricate your replacement entrance mat. The motto we operate by here at Ronick is "Measure Twice, Cut Once!" to ensure precise dimensions are captured. Check out our measuring tutorial for more information.

Production And Delivery Times

All Pedimats are custom manufactured to meet your projects specific needs. This customization allows you to not only select the size, but also the type and color of inserts, type and color of aluminum rails, hinges and frame, and type of installation and framing options.

Such customization options, fabrication and delivery generally takes some time and a specific timeline will be generated based on the scope of the project, location of the install, and the availability of the materials etc. IF you need your frame earlier, it can be shipped out separately before your mat is completed, at no additional charge. There is also an expedited program available to accelerate your mat production and shipping timeline at an additional cost.
