The Importance of Entrance Mats

The Importance of Entrance Mats

Entrance Mats are an important business need. They are designed to help create a clean, safe, and desirable environment. Without an effective matting system up to 24 pounds of dirt can be deposited monthly by 1000 people, and foot traffic can remove over 50% of the floor finish within the first six feet of entry into the building with those same1000 people entering the facility.

With all that extra debris in the facility there is an increased likelihood of someone tripping and falling in your facility and an expensive lawsuit being generated against your company.

Kurt Berendt, President, of Ronick, Inc. emphasizes that strategic placement of aluminum mats and roll-up mats will protect building owners from the hassle and exposure of a personal injury lawsuit. “A properly cleaned floor free from lingering moisture and debris, and a properly placed entrance mat will increase traction for foot traffic and help eliminate accidents.”

Correct use of commercial entrance mats is one of the primary ways to prevent slip and fall accidents. The transition area where customers enter your building is one of the most vulnerable spaces where injury can occur. When the weather is rainy or snowy, customers entering your building will have wet footwear. When the floor surface is a hard floor (i.e. marble, tile, wood) and there is no entrance mat or runner in this transition area, the probability of a slip and fall accident is greatly increased.

Did you Know?
  • One out of five falls causes a serious injury such as broken bones or a head injury. (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention- CDC)
  • Slips, trips, and falls are the second most common cause of injury at work. Shockingly, about 20-30% of people who experience a fall at work will suffer a moderate to severe injury, like deep bruising, a bone fracture, or a concussion. (Occupational Safety and Health Administration- OSHA)
  • 85% of worker’s compensation claims are attributed to employees slipping on slick floors. (Bureau of Labor Statistics)
  • Falls account for over 8 million hospital emergency room visits, representing the leading cause of visits (21.3%). Slips and falls account for over 1 million visits, or 12% of total falls. (National Floor Safety Institute)
  • Over 17, 000 people die in the U.S. annually because of injuries related to unintentional falls. (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention- CDC)
  • The estimated cost for medical and compensation for classic slip and fall lawsuits is approximately $70 billion per year. (National Safety Council)

Aluminum entrance mats not only help keep your entrance way clean and safe, but they also come in a variety of colors and styles to enhance any entranceway design/ building décor. The proper mat placement will extend the life of your interior floor surfaces, while also upholding a high-level appearance, function, and design for your overall building aesthetics.

When choosing your entry mat you want to ensure that the entrance floor mat is not a tripping hazard, it is slip resistant, and can safely allow for openings of debris and water. Walk-off entrance mats provide a safe and clean environment for everyone entering your building and stops dirt in its tracks.

Given the relatively high likelihood and expense of slip and fall accidents, the proper use of entrance mats and runners can protect your exposure to expensive personal injury lawsuits.

This particular foot grille is for a bank with 500+ people per day using this entrance. In addition to regular maintenance, on an annual basis this facility removes the foot grilles and does heavy duty cleaning for both the grilles and the recessed area. You can see the amount of dirt, debris, and salt deposited underneath.

Debris and dirt fall through the slotted spaces between each rail. This particular floor grille is designed with a 1-11/16" deep recess well. This depth provides maximum collection and retainage of dirt, debris, salt and moisture.
This picture shows what did NOT enter the building.

Dirt, along with moisture and ice melt can cause "clumps" that bond to the concrete surface in the recess well collection area. Use of a scraper removes any bonded debris eliminating salt pitting on the concrete well surface.

Over 10 pounds of debris was collected from this recess over the course of a year.

Clean Recess! The matting system is ready to operate at peak performance to maximize dirt retention and prevent debris from entering the facility.
