Foot Grilles are low maintenance -- they consistently reduce building cleaning costs. The correct placement of mats will extend the life of interior floor coverings and floor surfaces and help you achieve and maintain a high level of appearance, function and aesthetics. Recessed products are easily removed for cleaning the recessed well. Pedimats' carpet inserts capture moisture yet dry quickly.

FACT: Most people do not stop to wipe their feet when entering a building.

FACT: Mats that extend for 6 to 15 feet inside the entrance will trap 80% of dirt and moisture from the first 5 or 6 footsteps (Carpet and Rug Institute).

FACT: 70 to 80 percent of dust, grime and dirt are tracked in on people’s feet -- permanently damaging floors and carpets. (Institute of Industrial Launderers)

FACT: Some manufacturers recommend covering entire vestibule with matting.

FACT: Fifteen feet of effective, high-performance matting system can trap and hold as much as 75% of the soil at the door; 30 feet can remove as much as 100%. (ISSA)

The following issues should be considered when selecting entrance matting for your entryways, vestibules and transition areas.

  • Amount of foot traffic
  • The climate -- weather conditions
  • Environmental factors - whether the entrance has an outdoor canopy, comes directly off a sidewalk or comes directly off an asphalt parking lot, etc.
  • Whether entrance will be used for commercial deliveries or primarily foot and wheelchair traffic.

The entrance mat should cover the entire entrance to a building -- including any side entrances. This is your first opportunity to stop dirt and moisture from being tracked into your building. Length of matting should be the length that your entrance can handle -- many entryways don’t have recommend length so it is crucial to specify the most effective heavy-duty matting to cope with the denser traffic saturation of dirt and moisture. It is also important to start the matting system at the threshold of the door -- do not leave a gap between the entrance and the matting.

An entrance matting system should be appropriate for both foot traffic and wheeled traffic as defined by the ADA. Mat selection needs to provide a safe surface and transition from matting to permanent floor covering. Recessed aluminum mats are especially useful where there is a high volume of wheeled traffic. They provide a safe transition as well as provide a level surface that will not curl or bunch when crossed by wheelchairs, etc.

When selecting an effective an foot grille matting system you need to remember the key reasons for their use:

  • Matting should be slip resistant.
  • Entrance matting should STOP dirt, debris and moisture at the door.
  • Effective matting should HOLD soil and water until removed/cleaned.
  • Matting should have a bi-level construction that will scrape dirt and debris with longer, stiffer fibers and then have a finer fiber that will absorb and hold moisture.

A properly implemented foot grille system can reduce dirt from being tracked into a building can have a rippling effect by reducing cleaning and maintenance costs. Floor surfaces stay cleaner longer, without the need to mop, sweep and vacuum as often. Less dirt entering your building also means that less dust and debris is being ground into floors, decreasing permanent flooring maintenance/refinishing schedules.

There are a variety of mats that can fulfill these requirements, in particular use of recessed entrance wells with aluminum roll-up mats, grates or grills or the use of recessed wells with thick, heavy-duty, bi-level entrance mats. Entrance mats can give your building’s employees and customers a good first impression as well as a safe entry to your building.
